Your Ticket to the World
As a world language student at Elmhurst College, the globe is your classroom. A degree in French, German, Spanish or Multi-Language will help you participate in the global conversation and reach your full potential in any professional endeavor.
Elmhurst encourages all world languages students to study in another country. Every January Term, Department of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures faculty members lead courses to destinations such as France, Spain, Costa Rica, Martinique, Puerto Rico, Morocco, and Argentina.
You could spend January in Madrid with an Elmhurst professor who grew up there, or travel to Paris in the company of a faculty member who considers the city home. Elmhurst also sends students for a semester or yearlong stay to affiliated programs in Paris, Madrid, Berlin, Vienna, Freiburg and beyond.
Opportunities to Connect
Beyond the classroom, world languages students are active in co-curricular activities that help them practice their language and cultural skills.
- The department houses a Theta Upsilon Chapter of the Alpha Mu Gamma foreign language honor society.
- There are German and French conversation tables; as well as an annual international poetry reading event that coincides with National Foreign Language Week.
Whichever language you choose, you’ll work with faculty members who have deep expertise in everything from Chilean literature to second-language acquisition. But their primary passion is teaching. In small classes, your teachers will get to know you as an individual and help you reach your goals.
